School Asthma and Anaphylaxis Management Plans for 2026

As the 2026 school year approaches, it’s important to update your child’s Asthma and Anaphylaxis Management Plans. Booking a check-up with your GP to do this well before the school year begins will ensure your child is safe and supported, and that their school understands their individual needs for prevention and management.

FACTS ON THIS PAGE

What are Asthma and Anaphylaxis Management Plans, and Why Do They Matter?

An Asthma Plan is a personalised plan developed by your child’s GP. It outlines their daily asthma management, including what to do if asthma symptoms present or worsen, and provides clear emergency instructions in case of an asthma attack.

If your child is at risk of severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis), having an Anaphylaxis Management Plan is equally important. Schools and childcare services require a valid plan that provides permission to administer medicines and that outlines the need for trained staff in case of emergencies.

Some children require both Asthma and Anaphylaxis Management Plans. An up-to-date plan reduces the risk associated with unexpected flare-ups, helps manage triggers (like allergens, exercise, infections), and aims to avoid severe attacks and minimise school absences.

What Should You Do Before the 2026 School Year Begins

  • Book an appointment with your GP at Mernda Village Medical Centre for a full asthma/anaphylaxis review before school goes back in 2026 — the earlier the better. Your child/adolescent must attend the appointment with you.
  • Update or obtain an Asthma Plan — this plan must list current medications, clear instructions for worsening symptoms, and emergency actions. Asthma symptoms should be reviewed with a doctor (GP) every 6 months for children and every year for adults, and the asthma plan updated if necessary.
  • Check and replenish medications and devices — ensure the school or childcare service has the relevant inhalers, spacers, and up-to-date emergency allergy medicines. Expired medicines may not treat symptoms effectively.
  • Provide copies of the plan to the school/childcare service / after-school carers/sports coaches, etc. — distribute your child’s plan to all relevant organisations and parties.
  • Talk to your child about their asthma or allergy — educate them on how to recognise symptoms, when to ask for help, and how to use their inhaler and/or other medicines.

FAQs

How often should the plan be reviewed or updated?
For children, an asthma review — and plan update if needed — should occur at least every 6 months or sooner if symptoms/medications change. An anaphylaxis management plan should be reviewed and updated at least annually and whenever there is a significant change.

Who writes the plan?
A medical practitioner (GP) prepares the plan in discussion with the child and their carers/parents.

What should be included in the Asthma Plan?
The plan should list all regular meds (relievers and preventers), instructions for use, what to do if asthma worsens, when to use extra doses, and steps for an asthma emergency, including contacts.

What should be included in the Anaphylaxis Management Plan?
An Anaphylaxis Management Plan must include an individual student plan that includes risk minimisation strategies, clear emergency response procedures, communication plans for staff and parents, and details on adrenaline autoinjector storage and accessibility. The plan should also address staff training and collaboration with parents.

Does the school need to be informed?
Yes! Schools and childcare centres must have a copy of all asthma and anaphylaxis management plans, medication (in original packaging), and clear permission to give medicines if needed. They also need staff trained in first aid and asthma/anaphylaxis response.
